October 12th, ‘going ZERO waste’ Beach Cleanup

As part of our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, we are excited to continue our beach cleanup efforts for the Fall 2024. This initiative builds on the work we've been doing throughout the year to maintain and restore the same beach, fostering a cleaner and more sustainable coastal environment. Students will have the opportunity to make a tangible impact, contributing to the preservation of local ecosystems while earning community service hours. We invite everyone to join us in this meaningful endeavor to keep our beaches beautiful and healthy for all.
In addition to the waterfront, we'll also be focusing on cleaning up the parking lot of the Alameda Seaplane Lagoon Ferry Terminal, as the surrounding area has accumulated trash from the winter storms. The garbage piling up on the Seaplane Lagoon shorelines poses a threat to wildlife habitat, water quality, and overall ecological health. Let’s make a positive impact on ecological and wildlife health by removing this garbage, with the support of our dedicated volunteer community.
We offer volunteer hours to high school and college students and warmly embrace corporate volunteers to join us in strengthening our student-run foundation and the broader community. Families are also encouraged to participate in our efforts. Protecting the environment is a goal we all share, and by engaging in these activities, we set a positive example for the next generation
How to Prepare and What to Expect
Participate in our quarterly beach clean-up and debris data collection to preserve the pristine beauty of the S.F. Bay. By contributing our debris data to a global network, we'll assist in analyzing and addressing environmental issues more effectively.
What to Bring and Wear?
Before participating in our event, everyone must register first and sign the liability waiver during the registration process.
Gloves (like gardening gloves or leather work gloves)
Volunteer service form if you need service hours from the event.
Bring water: Stay hydrated by bringing your own reusable water bottle.
Dress appropriately: Wear comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting dirty. Closed-toe shoes are a must as you'll be walking on sand and rocks.
Sun protection: Be sure to bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun.
Note: Please bring your own supplies if you have them! We have a very limited supply of buckets and grabbers on site.
What to Expect
Try to arrive at our event a little before 10 AM to get ready for the Cleanup, a lot of the "best" trash might be gone if you're late! Upon arrival, please locate our beach Site Captain, who will provide instructions for designated parking areas, check-ins, and getting set up for the event.
There are two convenient parking options available: free parking along the road near the park or parking at DOER Marine on 650 W Tower Ave, then take a short walk to the park.
We kindly request that you pick up every piece of human-created trash you come across, no matter how small. It's important to scour the water line and areas near sea walls for any hidden stashes of litter. However, please be mindful and leave all naturally occurring materials such as seaweed, driftwood, rocks, feathers, and shells in their natural habitats, as they provide valuable food sources and habitats for a multitude of coastal critters.
It's important to keep track of everything you pick up to help build a more accurate understanding of the state of our oceans and coastlines. Logging items with Clean Swell® provides a simple and effective way to record what has been collected. This data is providing a snapshot of what is littering our coasts, inland waterways, and oceans. By contributing to this data collection effort, participants are helping educators and policy makers to develop long-term solutions to combat marine debris.
Please work together as a team and bring your bags or buckets to the location designated by the Site Captain for depositing your trash and recyclables at the assigned time.
Be sure not to miss the group photo at the end of the event around 11:45am to 12pm, we look forward to capturing some great memories and celebrate our time together.
